Tips on how to Achieve Your New Years Fitness Goals

Tips on how to Achieve Your New Years Fitness Goals

It’s the start of a new year, a new decade and many people’s resolutions are fitness and/or health-related. Most goals include hitting the gym more, training for an upcoming event, eating healthier or losing weight. Many people start off strong with their plan for their resolutions, however, the reality of maintaining these goals for some, dissolve after just a few weeks. In life, whether for good or bad, change is hard. Change can impact a person mentally, emotionally and physically, making it even more challenging for you to reach a goal. So, how do you pick a New Year’s Resolution and stick with it? Here are a few tips and resources to get you started on the right track.

Make your goals SMART and allow yourself achievable mini-goals:

S: Specific: When formulating a goal, be specific and realistic in your goal. Instead of “ I want to lose weight”, make a realistic goal such as “I want to lose 15 pounds in 4 months and participate in a 5k fun run”.

M: Measurable: Make your goals measurable. This way you are able to track your progress and see where you are for reaching your goal. For example, if you want to get more fit, you may not lose weight, but lose inches as your body tones. Taking measurements around your chest, waist, arms, and hips at the beginning, middle and end of your timeframe can help you set a good mindset for your goals.

A: Attainable: When making goals, make them realistic so they are attainable. If you have never run more than a mile before, a reasonable goal would be to run a 5k race, not a full marathon. If your goal is unrealistic, you can have a negative effect in lack of achieving it.

R: Realistic: Realistic goals are key.  If your work/life schedule allows you to go to the gym or workout classes 2 times a week; make your goals two times a week, not seven. You need to adjust your expectations/goals so they are in line with your schedule and commitments.

T: Timely: Make your resolutions timely so you have set a goal and do not lose focus. When setting a deadline you hold yourself accountable and provide yourself an end.

Once you have your goals in place, it’s all about the follow-through. You can come up with a plan to help get you where you want to go. The first and hardest step starts with deciding what you want. Be accountable to yourself, stay consistent, and the results will follow.
