The holiday season often proves to be a hard time for keeping up with fitness routines. While it’s fine to slow down during this busy time of year, completely forgoing your fitness routine will make it harder to get back into the swing of things in the new year. There are plenty of things you can do to keep up your fitness routine or make adjustments so that you can still prioritize movement!
How Can I Keep Up My Fitness Routine During The Holidays?
Schedule workouts: During this busy time, don’t just squeeze in a workout when you can. Schedule your workouts in your calendar like you would any other commitment.
Don’t fall for all or nothing: Don’t get trapped by the all-or-nothing mentality! Just because you don’t have time for a full workout doesn’t mean you should skip it altogether. Go for a 15-minute walk or do a shortened version of your workout.
Make it a challenge: Set a daily step goal or sign up for a holiday-themed race to add accountability.
Focus on maintenance: The goal is to maintain your progress during this busy time, not make huge gains.
Move in the morning: If you schedule your workouts for the morning, you’re much less likely to skip them when things start to pile up later in the day.
Get creative at home: Do quick bodyweight exercises like squats, push-ups, and sit-ups, or try an online workout like yoga or pilates.
Don’t let desserts stop you: Just because you may be eating more sweets this time of year doesn’t mean you should give up on your workouts. Small setbacks will happen, but that doesn’t mean you should give up!
Incorporate family and friends: Make fitness a group activity by going for walks after meals, playing active games, or joining a fun run.
Use downtime: If you know that you won’t have time to dedicate to working out, squeeze in some movement during downtime. Do some jumping jacks or stretches for a few minutes every hour during long periods of sitting to get in any activity you can.
Get a trainer: If you want to maximize the time you can put toward fitness during the holidays, a personal trainer can help you ensure you’re getting the most out of your workouts.
Switch up your routine: If your normal routine is incredibly time-consuming or requires you to travel far to reach your gym, consider changing your plan for the holidays. Create a temporary workout plan that is less time-consuming in terms of active workout time or travel.
