Starting with a personal trainer for the first time can be intimidating! A lot of clients aren’t sure what to expect, what to wear, or if they have to prepare beforehand. All of these unknowns can prevent people from booking an appointment with a trainer. So whether you have your first appointment coming up or you’re thinking about making an appointment with a trainer, this blog is for you! Take a glimpse at what your first session with a personal trainer may look like!
What Should I Wear for My Training Session?
Don’t overthink it! Wear clothes that you’re comfortable in and would typically work out in – including athletic shoes. If your training requires any specific clothing, your trainer will guide you on what you need to wear or bring with you.
What Will Happen During My First Session?
Initial Consultation – Your trainer will likely start with a conversation to understand your fitness goals (e.g., weight loss, muscle gain), your exercise history, and any relevant health information, including previous injuries or medical conditions.
Fitness Assessment – This may include various tests to evaluate your current fitness level, such as a movement screen, strength & endurance tests, and cardiovascular fitness tests.
Light Workout – Depending on the trainer and the assessment, you might do some basic exercises to demonstrate your fitness level and for the trainer to assess your form.
Goal Setting and Planning – Based on the information gathered, the trainer will discuss a personalized plan tailored to your needs and goals, outlining the types of exercises, intensity, and frequency of workouts.
Should I Ask My Personal Trainer Questions?
Absolutely! Your first session is a great opportunity for you to ask the trainer any questions you have about the process, their experience, or the gym itself. If you have any reservations about personal training or questions about what to do during your training sessions or outside of them, make sure you ask them!
Do I Need To Be At A Certain Fitness Level Before Training?
The short answer is no! A lot of people feel that they have to be at a certain fitness level before starting personal training, but personal trainers work with clients at all fitness levels. Don’t push off starting working with a trainer until you feel “fit enough.” Your trainer will build your plan based on where you’re at and will help you achieve your goals faster than working on your own!
