    Post Concussion Syndrome Rehab

Named Best Physical Therapy Practice by Arlington Magazine's readers in 2021

Post-concussion syndrome (PCS) can be complicated. Rehab needs to be tailored to each individual and he/she/they should work with a healthcare team including physical therapy.

In physical therapy we will treat:

  • Cervical (neck) dysfunction with manual therapy
  • Vestibular (inner ear) dysfunction
  • Balance deficits
  • Neurocognitive deficits
  • Post-concussion migraine
  • Delayed reaction time
  • Grounding and relaxation techniques

Return to sport is based on:

  • Buffalo Treadmill Test
  • Vestibular function
  • Reaction time
  • Neurocognitive testing
  • Full return to academics
  • No symptoms at rest or after exertion
  • Completion of Zurich Return to Sport Protocol

Proper after-care of a concussion is extremely important, and rushing back too soon can be detrimental to long term function. If a concussion is suspected, it is vital that the athlete does not go back into the game/practice since symptoms of a concussion can take hours to fully manifest. Clearance for return to sport is required by a trained healthcare professional.

Other concussion facts:

  • The use of helmets/headgear does NOT reduce the risk of concussion. There is research that suggests the opposite.
  • A concussion can happen with or without head impact. It can also occur from whiplash injuries.
  • No two concussions are alike!
  • Complete rest is not recommended past 1-2 days
