October is a special month for healthcare professionals and individuals committed to promoting physical well-being. It’s National Physical Therapy Month (NPTM), a time when we recognize and celebrate the invaluable contributions of physical therapists (PTs) and physical therapist assistants (PTAs) to our health and quality of life. NPTM is an opportunity to raise awareness about the importance of physical therapy and the impact it can have on a person’s health and well-being.
The History of National Physical Therapy Month
National Physical Therapy Month was established to honor the history and dedication of physical therapists who work tirelessly to improve the mobility, function, and quality of life of their patients. This annual observance began in 1981 when the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) dedicated a month to celebrating the profession and educating the public about the benefits of physical therapy. Since then, NPTM has grown in size and focus, spreading knowledge about physical therapy’s role in managing various health conditions and how physical therapy can improve people’s quality of life.
What Is Physical Therapy?
Physical therapy, also known as physiotherapy, is a form of treatment for pain and injury that involves massage, treatments, and exercises that provide physical stimuli. The goal of physical therapy is to relieve pain, improve mobility, or strengthen weakened muscles depending on the patient’s needs. These techniques can be used to treat acute and chronic symptoms, as well as, help prevent future injuries. Physical therapy exercises can be done outside of a practice or hospital. Another goal of working with a physical therapist is for you to gain agency in your own health journey. You can and should incorporate physical therapy exercises into your daily life at home
Why Is Physical Therapy Important?
Physical therapy is a vital component of healthcare that plays many different roles in patient care including preventing, diagnosing, and treating conditions related to physical function and mobility. Physical therapists work with individuals of all ages and address a variety of health concerns including but not limited to:
- Pain Management
- Rehabilitation
- Chronic Disease Management
- Injury Prevention
- Geriatric Care
- Pediatrics
- Neurological Rehabilitation
- Sports Injury
Why National Physical Therapy Month Matters
National Physical Therapy Month takes time to raise awareness about the role physical therapy plays in healthcare, acknowledges the work that PTs and PTAs do while providing an opportunity to express gratitude, encourages collaboration between healthcare professionals and patients to enhance patient care, and encourages individuals to educate themselves about the benefits of physical therapy so they can make informed choices about their healthcare.
How You Can Celebrate National Physical Therapy Month
Stay Active
Physical activity is an important component of a healthy lifestyle and is an important part of NPTM. Spend time this month focusing on being active in whatever way works for you. Being active doesn’t mean you have to go for a hike if that’s not what works for you! Take a walk after work, try out a dance class, take the stairs this month, walk in place, or lift a light weight while you sit on the couch. Being physically active will look different for everyone and should bring joy to your day!
Share Your Gratitude
If you’ve benefited from physical therapy, take some time to express your appreciation to your physical therapist. Let them know the impact they had on your quality of life and your health journey! You can share your story on social media and use hashtags like #NPTM or #ChoosePT. You can also tag us at @advanced_kinetics on Instagram or @advancedkientics on Facebook if you received physical therapy from us that you want to talk about!
Spread Awareness
Another great way to celebrate NPTM is to share information about physical therapy. You can share informative articles, videos, and resources about physical therapy with your friends and family. There can often be misinformation surrounding physical therapy and that its benefits are limited to a small group of people. If you’ve received physical therapy treatment you can share your story with others to let them know about the impact physical therapy can have!
